Pre-earthquake period

Produced in Lisbon between the last quarter of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century, this panel is composed of monochromatic square tiles, arranged diagonally, following a geometric composition which alternates horizontal rows of green and blue pieces, separated by white ones and delimited by a frame of green tiles.

In the 18th century, the production of thinner tiles made of clays and glazes of new and different chemical compositions, attests to the reformulation of space as an architectural element.
