Islamic Period

In 714 AD Olisipo capitulated under the Arab conquerors. The Islamic domination lasted over four centuries, until 1147.

The area now occupied by NARC was part of the western suburb of the city, which was growing since the 10th century. From this period, abundant structural and stratigraphic remains were identified, leading to the conclusion that the area was densely occupied; houses foundations, pavements and dumpsites were found along with a large amount of pottery production remains.

The ceramics recovered at NARC shows a profound link to the Islamic Mediterranean Civilization of that period. Goods would be trade on both regional and trans-regional levels.

An Ataifor, a typical wide bowl used to serve food (not for cooking). Made from pink clay and covered in a oxide-based glaze, both in the inside and outside. It is decorated with a red and purple lily or lotus flower coming out of a bulb. This symbolic element was meant to keep the freshness of the food. Most likely made in Olisipo.
